Local news outlets captured the smile on Reh-Fit member Janine Zajac’s face the moment she crossed the finish line this past weekend, finishing in first place in the 42.2-kilometre Manitoba Marathon.

But this wasn’t Zajac’s first marathon. She began her training at the Reh-Fit Centre in preparation for the Boston Marathon, which was held back in April.

“My training has evolved a lot over the years,” said Zajac. “I used to be a middle-distance runner in high school and university, so once I started to run half and full marathons, I really needed to increase the volume of my training.”

Surrounded by others committed to improving their fitness and overall well-being, Zajac found motivation and focus at Reh-Fit, where running on the six-lane indoor track became her sanctuary during the long winter months.

“I have never loved running more than I do now. I try not to take things too seriously and just enjoy the process,” said Zajac.

Zajac highlights the importance of being flexible with her training schedule, ensuring she has time for recovery when the body signals the need for rest.

She adds, “Always try to have fun with whatever you are doing – if you love it, you will keep going back.”

Beyond her training routine and dedication, it’s her community that keeps her going.

“When I’m racing, nothing motivates me more than seeing my family and friends along the course,” she said. “My parents and my sister never miss a race, and I am so grateful for their support.”

Recalling when and where her love for running began, Zajac’s earliest memory is of the Manitoba Marathon.

“My dad used to run the full marathon. My mom, sister, and I would go cheer him on,” she said. “When we got a little older, my sister and I started doing the super run and the marathon relay. I can’t remember a year when we weren’t at the marathon.”

Celebrating her win as the first female finisher of the full marathon at 2:58:17, Zajac looks forward to new challenges ahead. The community at the Reh-Fit Centre is just as excited to support her and cheer her on.
