Linda Rubell's Story
At this time of year, as we look back on the moments that shaped us, we're reminded how connections carry us through life's challenges. For long-time member Linda Rubell, Reh-Fit has been a steady source of strength—a community that has supported her through loss and stood beside her during the toughest chapter of her health journey.
1. You became a member 25 years ago. Were there some milestones in your life that Reh-Fit helped you through?
Linda: There definitely were a couple of pivotal points in my life where Reh-Fit was so important for me. My older sister died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 36. We were very close, and it was so difficult for me, and I was really struggling. A friend of mine, who was a runner, talked me into joining her for a run and from there running became a big part of my life. It was the therapy I needed, and it was so good for me.
2. When did Reh-Fit enter your life?
Linda: After running many marathons, I wanted to add a diverse fitness program along with my running. Reh-Fit opened the door to cross training for me. I loved the variety of fitness programs along with the strength training to help prevent injuries that are often common in running. The Reh-Fit also began a wonderful running program called the Heart Throbs many years ago.
3. And how did Reh-Fit fill any gaps in your fitness and well-being?
Linda: In many ways. I met so many new people, and many are now very close, long-time friends. At Reh-Fit I was able to be part of an amazing active community. Before I started running and joined Reh-Fit I remember thinking that I would never feel joy again after the loss of my sister. But if there could be a silver lining it was this loss that lead me to running and Reh-Fit.
4. Those friendships and the social interactions sound amazing.
Linda: The Reh-Fit and this community were there for me then and have been a big part of my life ever since. I started participating in the fitness and performance programs and I got into weight training, which I love. I found the fitness staff here were always such an excellent resource and you can tell that they genuinely want to help. I never felt that classes or programs were slanted toward seniors but weree taught in a challenging and safe way so you could work at whatever level was best for you. I never felt ageism here ever. If anything, some of the fitness pros often challenge us to do more, push more, but always in a safe and effective way.
5. You mentioned another time in your life that Reh-Fit helped you.
Linda: Last year I was diagnosed with stage four non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. I had been fortunate with my health and fitness, living without the need of medications, and had recently completed a half marathon. Then to receive a diagnosis of stage four cancer was a bit shocking and a lot to process. Surprisingly though, I felt very grateful that it had been discovered, and felt I was in good care and I had a great support from my family and friends.
6. Can you share how Reh-Fit helped you during your cancer journey?
Linda: My treatment was quite aggressive, but I continued coming to Reh-Fit as long as possible because it gave me strength physically and emotionally. My oncologist team was very supportive of continuing my workouts in such a safe and clean environment and coming early in the morning when there were fewer people. Had Reh-Fit not been so focused on exemplary cleanliness and keeping equipment in good repair, I would not have been able to come here during treatment with my compromised immunity.
7. May I ask where you are in your cancer treatment?
Linda: I did six cycles of chemo three weeks apart and so there were times I could not come as the treatments became less tolerable. But I tried to always keep up walking outside with friends. My husband Greg, who is also a member of Reh-Fit was my rock, along with the many friends I met through running and Reh-Fit, kept me going through my treatments. I am so grateful for all the support I received from family, friends and Reh-Fit. I'm pleased to say that my cancer is now in remission.
8. That is wonderful news, Linda!
Linda: I know, and I can't believe it - from stage four cancer to remission in 6 months. The PET Scan and other tests come back showing remarkable improvement. I believe that this result is due in part to the strength and conditioning I receive at Reh-Fit.
Surprisingly, after I was advised of my remission, I found it difficult to return to a more normal life, but again Reh-Fit was there to help. I first joined the Exercise is Medicine program to begin regaining my strength and confidence. Then I was so fortunate to be part of the 10-week program Moving Forward After Cancer at Reh-Fit. This program with the fitness components and the guidance and knowledge provided was invaluable to my recovery. There were 20 other cancer survivors in my program, and we quickly bonded and learned together how we would navigate and succeed in our life after cancer.
I will be in maintenance for the next two years, tested every 3 months, and as my form of cancer is not curable, I intend to do everything I can with the help of Reh-Fit and my family and close friends to stay fit for my ongoing health and happiness.
Linda, thank you for sharing your story—you are very inspiring and we wish you much health and happiness.
