5 Questions for Dave and Joan Mollins
This giving season, we are sharing stories that highlight the impact of donors’ generosity at the Reh-Fit Centre. Every person who walks through our doors comes here with purpose. For long-time members Dave and Joan Mollins, that means staying active and still having energy to spare. Their story is a wonderful example of how Reh-Fit helps older adults in our community stay strong, confident, and moving well as they age.
1. You have been members at Reh-Fit for 32 years. Has Reh-Fit made a noticeable difference in your life?
Joan: Oh, absolutely, and we are very grateful for that. Feeling energetic and stimulated all the time makes such a difference. We are very fortunate that Reh-Fit is here to keep us fit. It could be much different, but we both look much stronger and healthier than some people our age.
Dave: I know the difference Reh-Fit membership has made to my life. I lost about 60 lbs in the early years of my membership, which was the key to staying committed and in good health.
2. You’re at Reh-Fit every weekday—often more than once—and sometimes on a Saturday during winter. Tell us about your routine.
Dave: I’m up early every morning and am often in the parking lot before Reh-Fit opens. I then come back in the afternoon with Joan, so we both work out.
Joan: Being here every weekday makes me feel energized. It’s a big part of my day. At first, I mostly did track walking, but over my 32 years here, I have adapted and changed my routine to enjoy many other fitness activities, especially rowing.
3. How important is the social aspect—seeing familiar faces and having each other here—to staying committed to your well-being?
Dave: I meet the same four or five guys in the locker room every morning. Seeing people every day that you know is great for camaraderie and keeping each other committed.
Joan: When I walk in the door my expression changes, I immediately smile. Staff at the desk welcome us by name. It’s nice being recognized and I really enjoy conversations with members. I definitely feel at home.
4. Are there things in your life outside the Centre that you credit to your Reh-Fit membership?
Dave: A few years ago, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had to go through treatment. It was a stressful time for me. But I bounced back quickly due to my conditioning over the years as well as feeling safe and confident in my workouts at Reh-Fit.
5. What do you imagine for the next chapter, and do you see Reh-Fit continuing to support you in the coming years?
Joan: I can’t imagine not having Reh-Fit in my day, keeping me active and full of energy.
Dave: As long as I can walk through the door, I will be a member.
Thank you so much Dave and Joan for being so open and sharing your inspiring story.
